‘Bad Boys for Life’ review

Will Smith's Mike Lowrey, of course – a hardened super cop – is reluctant to admit it, but his longtime partner in the Miami police department, Marcus Bennett (Martin Lawrence), soon becomes a grandfather and starts talking seriously about going in. pension.

A threat from Lowrey's past, however, comes in the form of a Mexican cartel leader who recently escaped from prison (the soap opera star Kate Del Castillo), who sends his brutal, revenge-hungry son (Jason Scipio) to perform. his plans.

Pretty soon, there is reason to seek revenge from both sides, but all the collateral damage serves primarily as an excuse for a lot of chases and actions, some of which drag on endlessly.

Sure, action master Michael Bay is no longer at the helm (though he blesses the acts with a short cameo), but the team of directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah have clearly studied his filmography, which includes really blowing things up well.

In a nod to Mike and Marcus advancing towards their arthritic years, they reluctantly line up with a young team of elite cops – unleashing, yes, a barrage of jokes as an old man – played by Vanessa Hudgens, "Vikings & # 39; " Alexander Ludwig and "The son is also a star" Charles Melton.

For all pyrotechnic products, the film is frankly at its best in the most peaceful moments – however relative and sporadic they may be – which give the two protagonists the chance to play each other, with Lawrence making laughs from that quarrel, mouth open. (Joe Pantoliano also resumes his role as perpetually agitated boss.)

"Bad Boys" will never slow down for long, attentive to its formula. And after Smith's unfortunate foray into "Gemini Man", at least commercially, it may be just what the doctor ordered.

The real question is whether the kick-off to see the couple reunited will be enough, especially since the mix of blue skies, comedy and action from the film is certainly not new, and with the "Fast & Furious" franchise that has filled pretty good that lane.

"Violence is what we do," says Mike to Marcus, who is experiencing pangs of conscience in a subsequent exchange.

It may not seem like the most uplifting pastime, but once you've engaged in another "Bad Boys", well, what will you do?

"Bad Boys for Life" will premiere on January 17th in the United States. It is classified R.
