Health officials are dealing with a suspected case of coronavirus in Ivory Coast, the country’s health ministry said.
An unidentified student, who returned to the West African country from Beijing on Saturday, will undergo further tests after showing symptoms similar to those of the flu.
If confirmed, it will be the first case of the deadly virus in Africa.
The virus, which first emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan, has spread to more than 2,000 people and killed 56.
The 34-year-old woman is currently isolated, authorities said.
The traveler has lived in China for the past five years, according to the statement issued by the Ivory Coast Ministry of Health, and had shown flu-like symptoms before boarding the plane to Abidjan.
“His general condition is satisfactory,” said the ministry. “At this time, there is suspicion of a case of coronavirus-linked pneumonia.”
The results of the women’s tests are expected Sunday night.
Currently known as 2019-nCoV, it is understood that the virus is a new strain of coronavirus not previously identified in humans.
Since the outbreak in Wuhan began, several African countries have introduced additional controls on flights arriving from China.
