SHANGHAI: China reported another 5,090 new cases of coronaviruses on Friday and 121 new deaths on the continent were confirmed.
The health authority said a cumulative total of 63,851 people have been infected by the coronavirus. Up to 55,748 are currently under treatment, while 1,380 people have died.
Hubei Province, which is at the epicenter of the outbreak, previously reported 4,823 new cases with 116 deaths.
Heilongjiang Province, in the northeast, reported two new deaths, with the other deaths in Anhui and Henan provinces and Chongqing Municipality.
The number of new deaths and infections decreased dramatically the previous day, when a change in the methods of diagnosis of patients led to a record increase in cases.
The new figures do not indicate that the outbreak is reaching its peak, said Adam Kamradt-Scott, an infectious disease expert at the Center for International Security Studies at the University of Sydney.
Japan confirmed its first coronavirus death on Thursday: an 80-year-old woman living in Kanagawa Prefecture, near Tokyo. The death was the third outside of mainland China, after two others in Hong Kong and the Philippines.
Japan is one of the most affected in more than two dozen countries and territories outside of mainland China that have seen hundreds of flu-like illness infections.
