The finals of the “big four” banks in Australia have officially allowed Apple Pay support today. As reported by ZDNet, Westpac customers can now add their eligible credit or debit cards to Apple Pay.
Apple Pay Westpac support extends to all Mastercard debit and credit cards, and Eftpos Handycard. Westpac executives said that Apple Pay came at a very important time for customers, because they were looking for alternatives to get money amid the coronavirus pandemic.
“We are pleased to announce that Westpac customers can now use Apple Pay to make fast and secure payments. This comes at an important time for our customers, who are looking for alternatives to cash, “said Westpac Group CEO David Lindberg.
Lindberg added that Westpac had seen an increase in customers using digital banking because of COVID-19, and the adoption of Apple Pay would only increase further that:
“We have seen a significant increase in customers using digital banking in recent weeks as more and more Australians are staying at home. With the introduction of Apple Pay, it will now be easier for customers to pay for goods and services in stores, through applications or online without the need for a card or wallet. “
Westpac initially announced their plans to finally adopt Apple Pay back in December, with a target for June 2020 – but COVID-19 has clearly accelerated the launch. To add your Westpac card to Apple Pay, open the Wallet application and tap the plus button in the upper right corner. This application will then guide you through the process of adding your card to the iPhone and Apple Watch.
Westpac is the final of the “four major banks” in Australia to add support for Apple Pay. Large banks in Australia have it argue with Apple more than access to the iPhone’s NFC hardware, but has since given up and adopted Apple’s cellular payment platform. ANZ is the first of four major banks in Australia to adopt Apple Pay, followed by CommBank and NAB last year.
