British Airways and Qatar Airways hopes for more customs on certain Australian routes after the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) approved their joint venture to operate in Four Australian cities earlier this week. Airlines operate in joint ventures before sending their latest applications. However, Australia is not one of the countries listed. The airline will be allowed to start services in cities starting May 29.
The ACCC provides approval for Australia’s expansion
ACCC has approved applications for British Airways and Qatar Airways to operate joint ventures to four Australian cities. Both airlines submitted their applications in January 2020, hoping to get a chance to improve their customer service on this route.
At that time, the airline sought approval to run services between London and Doha, Manchester and Doha and Edinburgh and Doha. BA and Qatar request the ACCC’s permission to operate the Beyond and Behind route (B&B route) to the following cities:
Earlier this week, it was revealed that the ACCC had accepted the proposal.
What is the impact of Australia’s expansion?
British Airways and Qatar Airways will be allowed to participate in joint ventures to Australia starting May 29. The agreement from the ACCC is active for the next five years. During that time, both airlines hoped this business would bring many benefits to customers. In proposal to the ACCC, The joint venture claims: “Coordination is likely to produce a number of benefits to the public.” That’s because the agreement is more than just codeshare.
In the website, British Airways said:
“British Airways and Qatar Airways have collaborated to provide you with an enhanced network that offers you more flight options and better connections when traveling between the UK, Doha and surrounding areas. This will help make your travel experience easier and more useful. “
This new regulation allows airlines to coordinate their schedules, prices and marketing. The joint venture also said that passengers would benefit from greater flexibility in connecting flights, a smooth booking process, and access to the frequent airline flyer points system.
To date, Qatar and British Airways have agreements to work together in 80 cities around the world. However, the Australian route is not part of this.
Can a coronavirus pandemic affect the plan?
Qatar Airways and BA submitted their proposals in January this year, a few months before the enactment of global travel restrictions due to coronavirus. Since then, there have been some concerns that normal returns for the industry could be slow.
If that happens, then both operators could lose years of success in this endeavor. In 2019 alone, more than 670,000 British travelers visited Australia. In the coming years, that number will likely be far less.
Fortunately, this new agreement will not end until 2025, so there are many good years ahead for the two airlines. That said, the ACCC will oversee the development of the trip. He said he would reconsider his decision based on fluctuations in demand in previous years.
