Covid-19 has now killed more than 455,000 people worldwide since the outbreak appeared in China last year, according to tracking sites. The following are developments for June 19:
China publishes viral genome data from the latest Beijing outbreak
China has published genomic data for coronavirus behind the latest coronavirus outbreak in the capital city of Beijing, the state-supported National Microbiology Data Center website shows.
The government-backed Beijing News also reported that the China Centers for Disease Control and Prevention submitted genome sequencing data for the virus to the World Health Organization, which had previously sought access to the data.
China reports 32 new cases
Mainland China reported 32 new coronavirus cases, 25 of which were reported in the capital city of Beijing, said the Chinese National Health Commission.
This compared with 28 cases confirmed the day before, 21 of which were in Beijing. The local government limits the movement of people in the capital and increases other measures to prevent further spread of the virus after a series of local infections.
Five other asymptomatic Covid-19 patients, those who were infected with the corona virus but showed no symptoms, were also reported on June 18 compared to eight the day before.
China does not count this patient as a confirmed case.
Mexico posted a record number of infections
Mexico’s health ministry reports a record 5,662 confirmed new cases of coronavirus infection and 667 additional deaths, bringing the total in the country to 165,455 cases and 19,747 deaths.
The government says the actual number of people infected may be far higher than confirmed cases.
California citizens are ordered to wear masks in public
California Governor Gavin Newsom ordered all California citizens to wear masks in public in an effort to stem the spread of the virus.
“Science shows that face masks and masks work,” Newsom said in a statement. “They are very important to keep those around you safe, keep businesses open and restart our economy.”
His order came following a decision last week by officials in Orange County, south of Los Angeles, to overturn an order requiring people to wear masks in public.
Three other countries – Fresno, Riverside and San Bernardino – are also running supported by requirements to wear face masks due to public pressure.
Further US lockdowns are not needed, Fauci said
The United States does not need broader locking to control its outbreak, despite the fact that the daily national infection rate shows no signs of declining, government expert Anthony Fauci told AFP in an interview Thursday.
“I don’t think we will talk about returning to lockdown,” he said when asked if places like California and Texas that saw a surge in their caseload had to re-issue orders to remain at home.
“I think we will talk about trying to better control areas in the country that seem to be experiencing a surge in cases.”
Brazil inches toward 1 million cases
Brazil’s Ministry of Health reports new Covid-19 statistics showing the country is approaching 1 million confirmed corona virus cases and 50,000 deaths.
With the worst outbreak in the world outside the United States, Brazil now has 978,142 confirmed cases and 47,748 deaths, up 1,238 from Wednesday, the ministry said.
