President Donald Trump on Sunday suspended travel from Brazil, which has emerged as a major new hotspot in the coronavirus pandemic, the White House said.
Non-Americans who have entered Brazil in the 14 day period prior to when they sought permission to enter WE can’t come to America, White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said. Trading is not affected by new rules.
“Today’s action will help ensure that foreign nationals who are already in Brazil do not become additional sources infection in our country, “he said in a statement.
With more than 360,000 confirmed cases, Brazil now has the second largest number of cases in the world, after the United States. Has recorded more than 22,000 deaths.
Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is Trump’s political ally and with his harsh speaking style, not politically correct speech, he is nicknamed “Tropical Trump.”
And, like Trump, Bolsonaro has underestimated the health crisis, famously comparing the virus with “a little flu” and arguing that actions taken at home need not hurt the largest economy in Latin America.
Brazil downplayed Trump’s steps as standard procedure.
“The decision is the same as the steps taken previously that delay travel from other countries affected by COVID-19, including China, Iran, Britain and Ireland, and the EU Schengen zone,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.
Brazil itself has banned foreigners from entering the country because of a pandemic.
