Even more, 51% of surveyed Canadians said the border should remain closed until the end of the year.

Said Witzleben that she understands their fears.

“One thing I don’t want to do is cry about the beach club, when people are dying,” she said.

But this does not solve the problems of the family as hers, which relied on open borders, to support her extended family.

Although her parents live in Florida, they spend may to October living in Ridgeway, ONT., in the cottage they’ve owned for 40 years. Since they abandoned their home in Western new York and will not be accepted from Canada, they’re trapped on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, although they see doctors in Buffalo.

“Our family is actually being divided by this,” she said.

Meanwhile, active guests that the extended family is in Canada and limit the risk of exposure to coronavirus is no more an option. The family also shoulders a costly membership to a beach club in Canada that they can’t use. Witzleben said she knows other people who suffer even stricter separation of families.

Even if they could get to Canada, they will self-quarantine for 14 days, making any work-related commuting is impossible.
