Kempten, Germany, 30 September 2020 – Logistics for the soul, or rather, for the throat in terms of the global presence of the Swiss based Ricola herb. Developed from a secret recipe using a soothing Swiss mountain herb, this world-famous drops have soothed coughs around the world.
Starting in 1930, Swiss herbal candy manufacturer Ricola has grown to become a leading confectionery producer as well as a beloved brand worldwide. In fact, Ricola exports 90 percent of its hard and liquid central cough medicines and herbal drops and instant teas to more than 50 countries around the world, notably the United States, Germany, France and Italy. Ricola is also the market leader for herbal drops in Singapore and Hong Kong.
Through a close partnership with Dachser, a leading global logistics provider, Ricola is more focused than ever on driving productivity and transparency throughout its supply chain. Its primary objective is to leverage the strength of Dachser’s logistics network as a competitive advantage across its global markets.
Collaborate with Dachser – an experienced and reliable partner
Since 2008, Ricola has been working with Dachser to distribute its products worldwide. “At that time, we were looking for an experienced and reliable partner who could help us access a market where, ideally, it already existed, and who would give us maximum control over various processes based on network and IT capabilities,” explains Jochen Layer, Vice President of Corporate Fulfillment at Ricola AG.
“We feel like we are in the right hands of the word go with Dachser, and our needs are fully understood. That applies not only to our direct contacts in Switzerland but also to our contacts at Dachser’s branches in America and the Far East, where most of our exports are shipped, “Layer said. “We need to know that quality standards are maintained in accordance with relevant standards throughout the supply chain.” These are the properties of the product. “Therefore, we need a logistics partner who is competent, reliable, and at the top of the game,” added Layer.
The bigger picture – the evolution of robust and reliable logistics
“We are always looking at the bigger picture, optimizing all our processes and continuing to develop our supply chain. Our goal is to have a strong and reliable supply chain that allows maximum transparency along the flow of goods. We are not looking for a revolution here, but an evolution tailored to the conditions of each market, ”Layer said as he emphasized that Ricola has high expectations for the logistics services provided to the long-established Swiss company.
“We offer full transparency to our customers when it comes to transporting products from Laufen, Switzerland to the United States. We also use carrier options for safe carrying capacity. This makes it easier for Ricola to organize its stock along the supply chain and to further minimize the holding time between the end of production and distribution. And all from one source, ”said Bruno Zwiker, Marine Transport Manager at Dachser Air & Sea Logistics Switzerland. This results in optimal use of the US as a base and protects Ricola’s market position thanks to a well-planned and rapidly implemented supply chain program.
Global market accessibility – all from one source
Today, Ricola and Dachser are collaborating to improve the way they access core markets in Asia and North America. They also want to accelerate their ability to supply to Central and South America, which will now also be supported by a contract logistics center in Panama.
From the perspective of Samuel Haller, Country Manager for the Air & Sea Logistics business at Dachser Switzerland, the ‘one-stop shop’ approach benefits everyone involved. In his experience, a focus on one partner adds considerable value “both to distribution partners and to the Ricola Group itself. This type of concept also requires economies of scale that can be clearly measured. We can significantly optimize costs by improving capacity and procurement management, ”said Haller. By minimizing the interface with Dachser, Ricola was also able to concentrate more on the needs of its customers, which in turn strengthened its relationship.
With regard to Supply Chain Management 4.0, Ricola now wants to further intensify its partnership with Dachser through increased digitization and process integration. “This long-term collaboration based on partnership and trust would not be possible without the values and principles that we share,” added Layer. In fact, they are an integral part of a partnership like the 13 herbal blend with Ricola.
