Bryshere Graywho played Hakeem on Fox drama Empire, was today arrested in Phoenix after his wife told police that he assaulted her for several hours and choked her unconscious in their home on Sunday evening.
Local police said that the actor was arrested early Monday morning near his home in the suburban town of Goodyear, Arizona. Officers said gray initially refused to leave the house, so the SWAT team and crisis negotiations are designed to help.
He was taken into custody without incident a little after 7.m, and was booked into the Maricopa County jail on domestic violence.
Goodyear police said they responded to a 911 call about 10:15 p.m. Sunday. The caller said an adult woman allegedly told him she had been beaten by her husband in their home. She named gray as a suspect and identified themselves as his wife.
In a press release, police said that the woman did not stop a casual passer-by at a local gas station and told the driver that she was for several hours. Police said she was obviously hurt and told them that her husband choked her to the point where she lost consciousness. The woman was treated for not life-threatening injuries at a local hospital and then released.
Gray has appeared in all 102 episodes Empire which wrapped its six years on the Fox network in April. He starred as Hakeem Lyon, the fame-obsessed rising rapper and the youngest son of lucious and cookie Lyon (Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson). He got nomination for bet, image and teen Choice Awards for her role.
His credits also include indie-features Sprinter, Canal Street and Honey: get up and dance.
