KARACHI, Pakistan

Pakistan on Monday reported the death of another doctor from coronavirus, which raises safety concerns among health professionals who have complained about the lack of proper safety equipment.

Abdul Qadir Soomro, a veteran doctor, breathed his last in a local hospital in the southern port city of Karachi, becoming the third doctor in the country to die from the virus.

Soomro, 70 is the administrator of a charity hospital, managed by the Al-khidmat Foundation – one of the largest aid agencies in the country – in the eastern suburbs of Karachi, where he has set up isolation wards for patients suspected of suffering from the coronavirus virus, Health. The ministry said in a statement.

His death brought the death toll from COVID-19 to 52 in the country.

The number of cases of infection in this country has increased to 3,277, because 397 news cases have been reported over the past 24 hours.

A total of 257 patients, of them 130 on Monday, have recovered, while 17 are in critical condition.

So far, northeastern Punjab province has reported 1,493 cases, Sindh 881, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 405, southwest Balochistan 191, northern Gilgit Baltistan 210 region, the capital of Islamabad 82 and Azad Jammu and Kashmir confirmed 15 cases of coronavirus.

Meanwhile, the virus also spread to the country’s prisons, with 49 confirmed cases in prisons in Punjab province alone.

“We have 1,493 confirmed cases in Punjab, of which 49 are prisoners currently under quarantine,” Usman Buzdar, chief minister of Punjab, said on Twitter.

Since appearing in Wuhan, China last December, the novel coronavirus has spread to at least 183 countries and regions, according to figures compiled by the U.S. Johns Hopkins University.

Data shows more than 1.29 million cases have been reported worldwide, with the number of global deaths approaching 70,800, and more than 270,300 recoveries.
