McConaughey, who starred in a series of rom-coms in the early 2000s, said chemistry between the two leads was very important in the genre.

He said: “In a romantic comedy the script must be good but the main thing is that men and women, or two leads, must have chemistry. If not, it doesn’t matter how good the script is.

“Obviously we worked after that in other films but we have very good encouragement and pull.”
