Kate Garraway has opened about her ‘difficult’ birthday without her husband.

Host of Good Morning Britain was 53 years old yesterday while her husband Derek Draper continued to fight for his life after contracting the corona virus.

The former Labor adviser, 52, has been in critical condition at the hospital since the end of March with the latest updates showing he is stable but unresponsive.

In her latest Instagram post Kate, who is caring for a couple of two children Darcey, 14, and William, 11 at home, said that she knew that day would be a ‘hard day’ when she marked her first birthday in 16 years without her husband by her side.

He said: “So yesterday will always be a difficult one – the first birthday in 16 years without Derek – so for the children & me, his absence was very present.

“But we decided to do what I think we should do right now – not treasure & be grateful for the love around us – however far we are away from it. And focus on the joy of life & love in the moment – great & true little things really has to be the core of every day, but usually every day gets in the way. “

The presenter continued: “Thank you very much for all your messages, they are very meaningful, to my friends @itv who sent chocolates to the children & the aromas that arouse me, to friends who deliver food, tea & luxury milk & made me smile at silliness (derek is a person who believes strongly in the healing power of silliness), to my wonderful family, to derek’s friends who sent me messages about the good times they experienced with him (illustrated was when Derek editing a student newspaper – enter your own “bird taste” joking here!)

“And the strangers who got this cake >>> from @romankemp & all at @global & succeeded it was actually meant for me (was it the bourbons who gave it ?? !!) – Thank you all.”

However, Kate ended her position by thanking those who kept her husband alive.

“But most importantly, thanks to the NHS team who kept the crane with us and struggled every day to push it towards recovery,” he said before adding “# hope # positivetinking #consists together.”

Kate has been flooded with messages from fans and viewers.

GMB’s co-host Ben Shephard has offered regular updates to viewers from Kate.

He himself praised the NHS every Thursday for clapping for the caregiver movement.

Last week Kate said on Instagram: “Very thankful for tonight. Derek is still with us but how difficult it is.

“It’s so grateful for our incredible NHS who do lots of things for Derek every day – it’s nice to see all the support for them and our key workers every Thursday. We can’t thank them enough, can we? So be brave.”
