He died peacefully last night, his children announced.
Colin spent four years between 1994 and 1998 as entertainment editor of the Evening News and later became a freelance music writer for the Johnston Press title for almost 14 years.
He also spent time as a music controller and presenter at Forth FM and six years as a presenter for the BBC.
His children, Joe, Jake and Rachel Somerville announced the news on Facebook on Thursday night.
At the post, his son, Joe, wrote: “Jake, Rachel and I are heartbroken to announce that our father died peacefully tonight.
“We appreciate that he is a man with many friends and all of you want to convey your messages in a number of ways in this terrible situation that unfortunately we cannot be together. We can’t think of a way to deliver such terrible news.
“We will really miss the story, he never seems to run out of wild adventures to remember.
“We appreciate that this will be difficult news for many people to hear and we will appreciate every story that people want to share.
“Please take care of yourself. We will miss you father.”
Euan McGrory, editor of the Edinburgh Evening News, said Colin would be “greatly missed”.
He said: “Colin is a great Scottish pop music champion and has an endless entertaining story from his meetings and friendship with everyone from Prince to Jackie Leven from Fife.
“In addition to his outstanding work in broadcasting, he will be recognized and appreciated by many of our readers as a result of his long and honorable relationship with our titles, especially 15 years of reviewing albums for Scotland on Sunday.
“He is very loved and will be missed by his former colleagues and all those who love great Scottish music.”
Former Simple Minds manager Bruce Findlay also paid tribute to him on Twitter.
I am very sad to hear that Colin Somerville has died. “He wrote,” Colin gave me the Sunday slot on Radio Forth (Bruce’s Sunday Joint) in 1990 and then again a few years later with the slot 4 nights a week on Scot FM. He is a major influence and champion of Scottish popular music. RIP Colin. ”
