KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Chiwetel Ejiofor became stars in the efforts of the latest director of Gina Prince-Bythewood.
Chris Hemsworth had great success with hers Netflix action film “Extraction” in April, and now it has Charlize TheronTurn to engage in action. The streaming giant has debuted an official trailer for Theron’s “Old Guardian, “Next summer’s action hanger directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. This film is an adaptation of the comic book Greg Rucka of the same name and finds Theron back in superhero mode a la “Hancock” and “Aeon Flux,” with a few brutal acts such as “Atomic Blonde” and “Mad Max: Fury Road.” Prince- Bythewood is best known for his excellent romantic drama “Love and Basketball” and “Beyond the Lights,” which made “The Old Guard” an interesting first step into the area of the blockbuster for beloved directors.
“The Old Guard” stars Theron as an ancient warrior named Andromache of Scythia (in short Andy) who led a group of highly trained and enduring mercenaries through history. The group is in danger when they discover a new immortal has awakened (“If Beale Street Could Talk” runaway KiKi Layne), which causes their secrets to be discovered. The ensemble performers also included Marwan Kenzari, Matthias Schoenaerts, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Ngô Thanh Vân.
“It’s important to feel the burden of thousands and thousands of years on him,” said Theron Vanity Fair earlier this month about the protagonist. “The worst part for him is just feeling like he’s not doing anything. So what’s the point, you know? He lost faith, not only in himself but in humanity. I think many people can relate him at this time. We go through times in a life where we only see the world and go, God, you just feel like pushing a rock up a mountain. “
Theron also played the role of producer in the project. “Since I first read the graphic novel Rucka, I feel there is great potential to make this feel very relevant and ask some real questions about humanity,” Theron said. “Are we doing enough? Are we actually changing something? Are we making [things] better, or do we make the world worse? “
“The Old Guard” will be available for streaming July 10 on Netflix. Watch the comic film footage in the video below.
