When Elon Musk and Grimes announced the names of their baby boys in early May, the internet go ballistic. The little one is called “X Æ A-12”, Musk is tweeted, and everyone has a question, one of the most important is whether the name is even legal under California law (the answer is no).
There is also the question of whether the celebrity couple is really serious about the very unusual name, but it seems to be true.
On Sunday, a fan asked Grimes Instagram did he change the baby’s name because of California law. “What’s the baby’s new name,” the fan asked.
“X Æ A-Xii,” Grimes answered.
The new name is slightly more in line with California law, which states that official names can only be spelled using 26 letters of the English alphabet, dashes, and apostrophes. Spelling the number twelve in Roman letters qualifies not to use numbers, although that can arguably make the name even more unusual. However, the character “Æ” is still not permitted – we can only guess that, officially, it will be spelled as “AE”.
However, it seems that Grimes and Elon Musk are quite serious about his name, so … please more memes.
