Someone in MTV very optimistic. Apparently, MTV is ‘exploring’ possible ways to hold a Video Music Awards at the Brooklyn Barclay Center in August. If you think, “August 2021? That sounds absurd, especially if there was a vaccine at the time, “think again: they talked about August 30, 2020. Variation reported on Thursday, May 28, MTV sent a save-to-date notification to industry professionals who suggested that VMA might have a traditional format. MTV is exploring all possible options including virtual performances and ceremonies without an audience.
“We are exploring with government officials, the medical community, and key stakeholders on how to hold VMA 2020 safely at the Barclays Center on August 30,” read the MTV statement to Pitchfork. Thank God the key holder is being consulted. “The health of everyone involved remains our number one priority. In addition, we are working on some contingency plans to bring the greatest music night to viewers everywhere. “Given that much Outdoor music shows that have been pushed into the fall are considering delaying until 2021, it seems rather unrealistic that a massive indoor music event like VMA will be able to take place in August without major changes to the format. But hey, maybe someone on MTV knows something we don’t know about.
