All Five American Football Games On The Switch (Yeah You Read That Right) | Instant News

It’s Thanksgiving in the US as we publish this article, and here at NL Towers we have a brilliant idea – “let’s make a list of the best NFL styles for the Switch, like worthy football / football we do in Summer!”

Oh how we patted ourselves on the back, knowing that Thanksgiving for many is an eat-a-lot-food-and-watch-NFL day. Even as an Englishman, your humble clerk is (stupidly) a fan of the Chicago Bears, and will be watching the first traditional game of the day in the centuries-old battle against the Detroit Lions. [Erm, have you seen their records? – Ed.]

We diligently looked at the Switch eShop and the internet to find out which games were interesting to include and complete… all of them. To say it’s a slim result is an understatement. Indeed, these are all American Football games we can find.

And we had to cheat to include five. Healthy, at least the Retro Bowl is coming soon too.

So, yes, Enjoy.

Mutant Soccer League: Dynasty Edition (Switch)Mutant Soccer League: Dynasty Edition (Switch)

Publisher: Digital Dream / Developer: Digital Dream

Release date: October 30, 2018 (United States of America) / October 30, 2018 (UK/EU)

We didn’t really praise this in our review, but the developers promised a few months ago to add the missing content in a free update. Some people also enjoyed this game, the spiritual successor to the cult classic on SEGA Mega Drive; it plays like ‘real’ football to some extent, though of course the concept means there’s all sorts of extravagant and violent crime going on as well.

Release date: 30 August 2018 (United States of America) / 30 August 2018 (UK/EU)

SNK produces a wide variety of sports games for Neo Geo, so of course this is an American Football entry in the series. It has chunky sprites familiar to fans of the company’s output, with some neat touches like over-the-top player celebration animations and fancy spiral balls as they float through the air. As expected, of course, the Arcade Archives version on the Switch has a lot of goodies and small options thanks to HAMSTER’s work.

Football Heroes Turbo (Switch eShop)Football Heroes Turbo (Switch eShop)

Publisher: Run Game / Developer: Run Game

Release date: January 17, 2019 (United States of America)

It’s only available in the North American eShop (we couldn’t find it in the UK store, in any case), with this being the premium iteration after the previous mobile release. It draws some inspiration from the Tecmo Bowl but naturally offers more modern visuals, a faster pace, and added depth in terms of game options. It also spawns some combat for comedic effect, while the season mode has some RPG-lite twists. All told it’s a game that seems to best live up to simple expectations, short bursts of casual fun.

It’s a game that holds a lot of hearts, particularly the original NES release which (at the time) provided dizzying depth given the technology. It’s kind of cool, then, that we can experience the more technically impressive versions found in many arcades in the late ’80s. Surprising how looks different from the iconic 8-bit version, so if you’re curious about what Tecmo can achieve without battling hardware limitations, this version of the eShop is worth a look.

Release date: February 1989 (United States of America) / 17 Sep 2015 (UK/EU)

Okay, we already told you that we have to cheat to get five games, that’s how limited the reach of American Football games on Switch is. This is a slightly different but very memorable version of the NES game. It’s not in the eShop, but it is is in the NES app for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. If that doesn’t make NSO eligible to apply, so we don’t know what to say…

And that’s it, time for the winning formation. Not a party, right? We did our best but the Switch wasn’t blessed with many American Football games. Anyway, let us know your favorites — and anything we’ve somehow missed! – in the comments.

Honestly, we wanted to break this down a bit — please let us know we missed a few!
