Syracuse led Kansas 76-64 with a five minute rematch, but Orange became careless and Jayhawks stormed back. With 24 seconds left, Kansas has the opportunity to tie the game. Kansas keeper Kirk Hinrich missed a three-point shot with eight seconds left and Jayhawks were forced to foul the Syracuse attacker, Judge Warrick – who missed two free throws. Still with the chance to tie the game, Hinrich rushed the ball up to the court and passed on to Michael Lee in the corner. Warrick then made up for his missed free throw by blocking Lee’s three-point effort with seven-tenths of a second remaining. Syracuse maintains an 81-78 advantage and wins the first national title in school history. Carmelo Anthony from Syracuse, who scored 20 points in the match, became the third freshman in NCAA tournament history to get the best player award.
