The disappointing LA Galaxy didn’t want to wait until the end of the season to start their rebuilding. Coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto was sacked Thursday with three games remaining in the regular season and the Galaxy are last in the Western Conference.
General manager Dennis te Kloese said the biggest reason for the immediate change was too many games where the team was underperforming. The Galaxy have lost nine out of 10 while scoring 26-8. They have missed four games and also lost four by three goals or more during that time, including Wednesday’s 5-2 defeat in Portland.
Barros Schelotto is in his second season with the club and has a 21-26-6 record in Major League Soccer. LA is 5-11-3 this season with the next game being Sunday when they host Real Salt Lake.
“We went up and down like rollercoasters,” said te Klose. “There are too many matches that don’t represent what our fans expect. The results are not good or even close to good. “
Dominic Kinnear will serve as interim coach for the remainder of the season. Galaxy also fired assistant coach Gustavo Barros Schelotto, assistant coach Ariel Pereyra, goalkeeping coach Juan José Romero, and performance coach Javier Valdecantos.
Barros Schelotto was hired in January 2019 after nearly three years at Boca Juniors, where he won two championships in Argentina’s top division. He also played a decade with Boca Juniors before spending four seasons with the MLS ‘Columbus Crew.In four seasons with the Crew from 2007-10 he scored 38 goals and was named league MVP in 2008.
The Galaxy reached the playoffs in 2019. snapped a drought for two years after the season, and advanced to the semi-finals of the Western Conference before losing to rivals Los Angeles FC. But charismatic superstar Zlatan Irbrahimovic decided to return to Europe, and the Galaxy were unable to make up for the loss despite signing Javier “Chicharito” Hernández to join talented strikers Cristian Pavón and Jonathan dos Santos.
Hernández has only one goal in 10 games despite being the highest-paid player in the league. Hernández is contracted to MLS until 2022. Te Klose has denied reports that Hernández may be loaned out to Mexican League club Chivas de Guadalajara with an option to buy.
“We haven’t been able to relate to its full potential. Now, of course, with the challenges we have been through throughout the year, it has been a very challenging year, the personal challenges are definitely not helping at all, “said te Klose.
Kinnear is the fourth winning MLS coach with 169 victories and led Houston to two MLS Cup titles. He was the interim coach of the Galaxy in 2018 and collected a score of 3-2-1.
