MISSOULA – The Montana women’s basketball team has had to wait even longer to play its home opening game.
Lady Griz coach Mike Petrino discovered Tuesday night that Big Sky Conference’s home games against Southern Utah on Thursday and Saturday had been canceled. Southern Utah has a positive COVID-19 case in the team.
“I got a call around 9 o’clock last night that they had a positive test, so they had to shut down for some time,” Petrino told Missoulian and 406mtsports.com. “It’s disappointing. It’s a difficult situation and I don’t think we’re going to make up the game, which is really annoying because it’s a game I think we can get.”
The Big Sky Conference has indicated that postponed league games will not be made – at least that is the rule of thumb at this point. Montana holds out hope for rescheduling. There was some leeway in Big Sky’s circle of men.
Petrino said Monday afternoon’s non-conference home game against North Dakota was still in progress. Lady Griz (0-1) will be supported by the return of seasoned guard Jordyn Schweyen, who missed last week’s opener.
Two players on the list will miss Monday’s match. They are Missoula Sentinel graduates Kylie Frohlich and Shelby Schweyen, who are in treatment for injuries. Frohlich is expected to return later this month.
