Opera acquires YoYo Games for $ 10 million and launches the Opera Gaming division | Instant News

Web browser builder Opera has been obtained YoYo Games, maker of the game machine GameMaker Studio 2, for $ 10 million, and has also launched its Opera Gaming division.

The agreement underscores OperaAttempts to differentiate its web browser, Opera GX, through the gaming community. Opera itself has more than 380 million people who use its web browser around the world. Its new Opera GX game browser had seven million monthly active users as of December, up 350% from the previous year.

Opera Gaming will focus on expanding Opera’s capabilities and monetization opportunities in games, said Krystian Kolondra in an interview with GamesBeat. Publicly traded opera based in Oslo, Norway YoYo Games based in Dundee, Scotland.

“A few years ago, we took the decision to produce innovation and not have to compete with the mass market in browsers,” said Kolondra. He is the executive vice president of the Opera browser. “We are focused on a few segments that are truly growing and meaningful. So we decided to leave after playing the game. “

GameMaker Studio 2 found its niche as a tool for creating 2D games, and is used by people who have little training in skills such as programming. Kolondra said technology had reached a point where people became interested in making their own games as well as playing them. Opera also has a built-in cryptocurrency wallet.

YoYo Games has more than 400,000 new users registered in 2020.

“This lowers the entry barrier for anyone to start making their game,” said Kolondra.

Games can run on various web supported platforms including PC, iOS / Android mobile devices, and consoles.

YoYo Games general manager, Stuart Poole, will continue to run the business with technical lead Russell Kay. YoYo Games has been working on the GameMaker engine for years, and has been downloaded more than 10 million times since 2012.

Opera launched the Opera GX gaming browser in 2019. Opera features customization options, sound effects, background music, a game-inspired design, as well as CPU, memory, and network bandwidth limits which make the browser less resource intensive.

Some of the big hits made with GameMaker include Risk of Rain, Undertale, and Hyper Light Drifter. The games have sold millions of copies. Kolondra said the company doesn’t plan to make an exclusive game that runs solely on the Opera GX browser, as the goal is to create a community around Opera GX users, but also make GameMaker Pro 2 available to those who want to create cross-platform games.

Kolondra says good browser performance is essential even for playing 2D games, and maintaining that performance across mobile and laptop devices as well as variable bandwidth and connectivity requires thinking beyond traditional application silos. The line between building good games and a good browser has been eroded over the years – with game interactivity across internet connections increasing and browsers growing more multi-functional and sophisticated, he said.

Opera GX has gotten good reviews from players who don’t want to sacrifice performance by just running a web browser, says Kolondra. It has more than one million ratings to date.

“For us, games are more like a community now,” said Kolondra. “This will accelerate our growth because it will be a very unique value proposition. GameMaker Studio makes it easy for people to create games. “
