This is part of an ongoing series at SKOR North where we share our staff recommendations for things to do while we all Stay Home, Minnesota.
Consider this part of your Quarantine Survival kit. Some of our staff members have compiled a list of video games that they recommend based on various criteria. Jonathan Harrison, Op Brendon Berger’s Overnight Board, and Engineer Paul Black combine their lists to provide an extensive list of video games to play when you stay at home.
Also, note that this is NOT a list of the best games ever played. That subject is very subjective and much debated.
The main sports games out there:
- Madden 20 (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows)
- NBA 2K20 (PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Android, Microsoft Windows)
- MLB The Show 20 (PS4)
- FIFA 20 (PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Windows)
- NHL 20 (PS4, Xbox One)
- Football Manager 20 (PC, Mac, iOS)
- NCAA Football 14 (Unfortunately this is the last in the series before the game is canceled) (Xbox 360, PS3)
- Mentioned here for NFL 2K5 because Matthew Coller would be angry if I didn’t give one of the best soccer matches ever mentioned here. (PS2, Xbox)
All Mini Consoles
Paul: Mini NES, SNES, Genesis, even PS1 Mini. Very retro fun !! You can’t be wrong with them. (* Don’t pay too much for PS1 Classic *)
The Last of Us (2013) (PS3, PS4)
Jon: It is widely considered to be one of the best games of the last generation of consoles but is perhaps in the greatest gaming lineup of all time. You play as Joel, a survivor of the virus that is taking over the world and you are assigned to bring teen Ellie throughout the country. You play through their journey across the post-apocalyptic United States against infected and humans who want to harm you and Ellie as you travel to your destination.
Red Dead Redemption 2 (2019) (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
Brendon: The three main criteria that I use for this list are Immersiveness, Length, and Replayability. Red Dead Redemption 2 (hereinafter: RDR2) brings home gold in all of these categories. RDR2 puts you in the role of Arthur Morgan, a comedian and a cowboy in the world who is quickly leaving his way of life. RDR2 is a must for anyone who only appreciates good video game fiction works. This is the perfect choice to take shelter on the spot thanks to the in-depth game experience and long campaign. Finally, it also includes online mode if you and your friends ever want to be saddled and live as a criminal or lawyer.
Jon: Easily one of the best video games that came out last year, this Western is actually the prequel Red Dead Redemption (2010). Do you want to distract yourself for more than 100 hours? This game has enough of a storyline to hunt to side missions to make you a cowboy for countless hours.
Paul: I finished this game a long time ago and I keep going back for more.
Untitled Goose Game (2019) (PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC, Mac)
Paul: You geese. You are a ** hole. You terrorized and tortured and stole from local residents. A must-play!
Civilization VI (2016) (PS4, Switch, Xbox One, iOS, PC, Mac)
Brendon: Dive deep for nerds from certain lines here, but when it comes to games that you can play forever, the Civilization series is the gold standard. Civ 6, Like all Civ series, it brings great benefits from extended gameplay (seeing the game to the end can take hours or days) and unlimited replayability. Perfect for situations where you get a lot of free time that is suddenly and enforced.
Horizon: Zero Dawn (2017) (PS4, PC)
Jon: Robot: Check. Dinosaurs: Half a Check. Dinosaur Robot: Check!
In this open world RPG (role playing) you play as Aloy. You are equipped with tech bows and arrows and you travel to a large open world and fight against wandering robot dinosaurs. Do I really need to say more? If I do, this game allows you to set traps, display really cool stories, and, again, T-rex robots. You can throw more than 60 hours into one of the best games on PS4.
Fallout: New Vegas (2010) (PS3, Xbox 360, PC)
Brendon: Fallout: New Vegas (FNV) is the best western country featuring plasma guns, aliens, and atomic air cannons. FNV, in my opinion, is the best entry in this series. It combines elements of RPG, shooter, western, and sci-fi all in a fun post-apocalyptic package. FNV is a single player experience but it shines in this role. It’s easy to lose yourself as you explore the desert and New Vegas. Better yet, you can’t experience all of the game’s content and end in one game because of the choices that must be made.
Overwatch (2015) (Xbox One, PS4, Switch, PC)
Brendon: Sometimes you don’t look for intellectual advancement, sometimes you just want to enjoy a little chaos, right? Of course you do! And when this mood struck, the 2016 Overwatch Blizzard offer was only game for you. Overwatch is a team based multiplayer first person shooter. If you feel itchy to do online shooting when you are trapped indoors, try this game.
Wreckfest (2014) (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
Paul: One of my favorite games easily all the time. This is the perfect balance between race and collision, with an emphasis on collisions.
The Mass Effect Trilogy (2007, 2010, 2012) (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
Jon: My personal favorite video game series of all time. This vast space makes you trapped as Shepard Commander who fights against ancient aliens who are subject to the extinction of all galactic life. The great thing about this series is that the decisions you make in the first game affect how you play in the final of the series.
Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017) (Divert, Wii U)
Brendon: Most people are familiar with the Zelda series now and what is needed. BotW provides all the classic hits that you return but with new elements. BotW takes place on the large open world map of Hyrule which adds an exploration element to the series. Besides the main story of the game, there are many side adventures. You will have lots of fun time to look forward to if you take this title.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (2017) (Switch)
Jon: My single family friendly recommendation here. The eighth installment in the Mario Kart franchise and the first on the Nintendo Switch. The Switch’s unique controls make this Mario Kart edition more enjoyable than past experiences and family-friendly if you live at home with children.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons (2020) (Switch)
Paul: The latest installment of the Animal Crossing franchise is my latest obsession. I just picked it up on the Switch and can’t stop playing. This real-life simulation game (meaning even when you turn off the game while the game is still running) is the most appropriate for getting stuck in a home game.
Star Wars: Fallen Order (2019). Spider-Man (2018). Batman: Arkham Series (2009, 2011, 2013, 2015), Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (2018), Doom Eternal (2020), Cuphead (2017), Crusader Kings II (2012), Saints Row: The Third (2011), and The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim (2011).
