This time the law enforcement apparatus was ready. They continued to allow traffic to flow and limit revelers on the sidewalks.
By 9 p.m., roughly an hour after the match ended, the crowd had dispersed. In previous years, the celebration would last late into the night.
It’s unclear whether the people who storm Franklin Street and congregate on the sidewalk will face repercussions from universities or law enforcement.
Rushing Franklin Street is a tradition at UNC after the men’s basketball team beat Duke. However, with the COVID-19 pandemic ongoing, that’s a tradition brought scathing criticism early in the season; which is why officials said they would not allow it a second time.
That UNC Tar Heels beat Duke Blue Devils 91-73 to finish the regular season of their archrival sweep.
According to ESPN Insider John Gasaway That loss probably means Duke has to win the ACC Tournament to make the NCAA Tournament.
If the Blue Devils fail to qualify for the NCAA Tournament, it will be the first since 1995 – the season in which Coach Mike Krzyzewski withdrew from coaching due to injury.
The Blue Devils finished the regular season without a winning streak for the first time since 1994-95 – a season in which Coach Mike Krzyzewski was sidelined by injury.
Duke has made 24 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, the second longest active streak of its kind, but will likely have to win five matches in as few days at the ACC tournament to earn a place this year. The Blue Devils’ longest winning run this season is four.
Armando Bacot, Kerwin Walton and Caleb Love scored 18 points apiece and North Carolina has never missed a 91-73 win over Duke on Saturday in the regular season final for both teams.
Walton made 4 of 7 from 3 points and Love had seven assists. Garrison Brooks added 14 points on 6 of 9 shots for North Carolina (16-9, 10-6 ACC).
Tar Heels will be the No. 6 and get a first round bye at next week’s conference tournament. Tenth seed Duke (11-11, 9-9) plays 15th seed Boston College in the first round on Tuesday.
Bacot scored seven consecutive points to start the 22-4 round which made it 26-6 when he closed the streak with a dunk midway through the first half.
Mark Williams led Duke with 18 points, DJ Steward added 16 and Matthew Hurt 14.
North Carolina made 31 of 56 (55%) from the field, shot 44% (8 of 18) from 3 points, and outperformed the Blue Devils 21-12 from the free-throw line.
Duke cut the deficit to 13 when Wendell Moore Jr. made a jump start to the second half by Walton replied with a 3 and the Blue Devils did not come close.
