The East-West All-Star clinic and game is canceled – Salisbury Post | Instant News

Staff Report

The East-West All-Star match, a North Carolina summer sports tradition that began in 1949, was canceled Thursday by the N.C Coach Association.

It was a unanimous decision by the council.

“We stayed as long as it seemed feasible but Governor Cooper’s extension of the current restrictions to June 26 makes us not hope we can guarantee the safety of our players and coaches,” said NCCA Executive Director Phil Weaver.

The match is scheduled to be held July 20-22 in Greensboro, as the main event of a major sports week which is built around the annual NCCA Coach Clinic, which was also canceled.

Girls and boys basketball, soccer and girls and boys soccer matches scheduled.

Players selected to play in the all-star game are notified of cancellations by email on Thursday morning. Selected players include soccer player Rowan West Edwin Fuentes Berrios and Jalen Houston, A.L. Brown football B.J. Foster, and Madison Henry, the first female soccer player selected from South Rowan.

Cheerleaders Carleigh Tadlock (South Rowan) and Cayla Artis (A.L. Brown) have been selected to appear as part of an All-State squad of 30 people.

“We are not sure we can take care of you and your coach because there is no information about the virus, government regulations and concerns that many of you have lost some or much of your normal physical condition. We cannot jeopardize the health of you or your staff or your future college opportunities, “Weaver wrote to those affected by the cancellation.

Decisions must be made before 26 June to fulfill the contract agreement. Basketball clinics and matches are held at the Greensboro Coliseum. The soccer match is played at Grimsley High. The soccer match is played at McPherson Stadium.

Players selected to play in the game can contact the NCCA office next June if they want to come to 2021 games to be recognized in the first round.

Instead of being held on site, the trainer’s clinic will now be a series of video sessions that will be posted on the NCCA website.

The plan is to return to normalcy in 2021.
