2020 will go down in history as the Year of the Mask. During the Covid-19 pandemic, masks emerged as a du jour fashion accessory. Galleria Dallas partnered with Fashion Group International’s Dallas branch to present their Fashion Meets Mask exhibition and virtual auction in November.
More than fifty face masks made by local and national celebrities will be featured at Level One on Galleria Dallas November 5-30. The proceeds from their sales benefit the Fashion Group Foundation of Dallas. , a non-profit organization that awards scholarships to fashion design and fashion merchandising students across the region.
Figures designing the masks include local designer Venny Etienne, a Bravo Project Runway contestant best known for his gold jacket featured in Beyonce’s “Black is King” video. Dame Zandra Rhodes, British designer for celebrities such as Princess Diana and Freddy Mercury, also designed the masks. Visual artists such as Jeremiah Onifade and Lea Fisher have submitted their work. Actresses Linda Gray and Morgan Fairchild as well as athletes such as Troy Aikman and Darryl Johnston also designed the masks.
Fashion Meets Mask Fundraising
Fashion Meets Mask is a valuable fundraiser for the scholarship program offered by FGI. The Dallas Chapter provides over $ 60,000 in scholarship funding each year. FGI Dallas will have to postpone their biggest annual fundraiser, Night of Stars, until 2021 because of the pandemic, so this special event will aid their efforts to raise much-needed funding. Several past Night of Stars award recipients are designing and shipping masks to aid in this endeavor.
“Since its inception, our scholarship program has awarded nearly $ 1.5 million to students seeking education in fashion design and merchandising,” explains Regional Co-Director Rhonda Sargent Chambers. “Although the funds are usually raised through galas and other events, we are grateful to Galleria Dallas for helping us find new ways to fund this valuable scholarship.”
The mask collection will be on display at Level One near Banana Republic starting November 5, and will remain on display until November 30. Visiting the exhibition is free, and the masks will be auctioned off virtually. Bidders can use the QR code on the spot at the fair, or bid online at //events.handbid.com/auctions/fashion-meets-mask.
