The founder of food pantry fights cancer while struggling to keep people fed| Instant News

Work began on Monday, preparing food boxes to be distributed at the Manatee Baptist Food Pantry.

Skip Mahoney has worked for more than a decade ensuring the family is fed. What started with only a dozen volunteers has turned into hundreds of free meals for the surrounding community.

“Now the fun begins, we must give it all,” Skip said, rolling a basket of boxes through the kitchen. “We have plenty of food to give.”

But Skip was forced to slow down. After being diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, he took a more relaxed role in the food pantry.

“I want to say it needs more than this to pressure me, but we’ll see,” he said.

Although chemotherapy takes time for him physically, Skip still appears to help the kitchen, giving time to help those who need help.

Skip has a phrase that volunteers recognize.

“One hour, one day a week, don’t judge,” he repeated.

Skip not taking any credit. He is the motivator, the driving force that keeps the food kitchen going.

“Not me. No. Not all volunteers here are entitled to praise. They work hard, for hours, they don’t ask for anything. They are dedicated to what they do,” he said. the word.

Although he could no longer hand over food personally to everyone who passed by, he was there to support.

“He wants them all to get a box. He really devoted himself to this,” volunteer Phil MacDonald said.

While Skip fights his own cancer, no matter how bad it is, he has one promise for the community:

“I’ll be here until I can’t be here anymore.”
