BATON ROUGE, La. – The Louisiana Department of Education’s Division of Nutritional Support is now accepting applications from eligible institutions and organizations to sponsor and program sites for the 2021 Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), which provides healthy meals for children, especially those with disadvantaged backgrounds , during the summer months when school is not in progress.
The federally funded SFSP is administered on behalf of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) through the state department of education. Any child 18 years of age or younger, or anyone over 18 who is determined by a state or local education institution or local public education institution to be mentally or physically disabled and who participates during the school year in a non-public or private For-profit school programs, which are established for people with mental or physical disabilities, can receive meals through SFSP. The program is held in economically or environmentally disadvantaged areas or neighborhoods and communities where half of school children are eligible to receive free or discounted meals during the school year. Eligibility can also be determined by census information, through the use of site-level Community Eligibility Requirements (CEP) information, or by using children’s individual eligibility.
Approved sponsors receive financial assistance to help with the costs of obtaining, preparing, and serving meals under the program, including administrative costs. The sponsor must be able to provide capable staff, managerial skills and food service capabilities. The sponsor can provide its own meals, purchase meals through an agreement with the area school or a meal contract with a food vendor.
Examples of local organizations that frequently sponsor include: public or private non-profit schools; local, municipal, parish, tribal or state government; private non-profit; public or private non-profit camps; and private or non-profit universities or colleges.
