Pet food shortages are having an effect on local pet shelters and shops | Instant News

ROANOKE, Va (WFXR) – Local animal shelters, grocery stores, and pet stores are feeling the effects of a country-wide pet food shortage.

We first saw toilet paper, hand sanitizer and Lysols flying off the shelves, and now they are wet / canned pet products.

“We’ve been struggling like everyone else over the past year, trying to get a different supply,” said Anita Scott, director at the Franklin County Humane Society Adoption Center.

The Franklin County Humane Society relies on donated food, and when the shelves are empty in stores it is a concern for them.

“It gets scary when things are low. Especially if we have a house full of our pets, ”said Scott.

This also worries local businesses such as the Nature Emporium in Roanoke.

“With us the missing product. “This sends people all over the place to see if they can try and find the product elsewhere,” said Katelyn Suttles, assistant manager at Nature Emporium.

A shortage of pet food has been blamed on high demand for food and fewer workers during the pandemic.

“Almost all of our items are used up. Our goods were delayed by three months simply because they couldn’t hire enough people at the facility to produce what was needed, ”said Suttles.

Even big box stores like PetSmart were hit. In a statement to WFXR News, PetSmart said, “Throughout the pandemic, more people have added pets to their families, driving an increase in demand for pet food. With this increasing demand, we are seeing a shortage of wet food producers affecting our supply of canned goods both in our stores and online. We are committed to doing all we can to help pet parents feed and care for their pets and are actively working with our production and delivery partners to ensure supplies are increased to better meet today’s demands. “

For the Nature Emporium, this isn’t just canned food, but other items like necklaces, bedding, toys and bags.

“All of that is not produced in the US. Everything came from China and so on. We had a hard time putting in a lot of things like that, “said Suttles.

Although some of the shelves may be empty at Nature Emporium, they do their best to help their customers in need find the best products for their furry family members.
