Many Germans say China will overtake the US as a superpower: survey | News | DW | Instant News

Around 42% of Germans feel that the United States is likely to slip from its position as the world’s leading power in the coming decades, with China moving up to replace it, a survey published on Tuesday showed.

Only 14% of those surveyed by the UK-based YouGov polling agency believed that the US would maintain its supremacy. About 23% were hesitant and 22% did not respond to the survey question, “Which country, US or China, will be stronger in the next 50 years, do you think?”

Opinions on this issue vary depending on which party the respondent chooses. Supporters of the Left Party tend to predict the majority of China’s future dominance over the US (54%), as do supporters of the business-friendly Free Democratic Party and Green environmental activists (52%).

Voters who support the right-wing alternative to the German party are the most likely to say that the US will remain as the dominant world power, but even here, only 17% respond in that tone.

The survey was conducted from July 10-12, with 4,054 people aged 18 years and over taking part.
