Germany does not exclude Nord Stream 2 from EU gas directives – Germany’s decision not to free Nord Stream 2 from EU gas directives is a blow to Russia, – ambassador | Instant News

Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany Andriy Melnyk welcomed the German government’s decision not to be released Nord Stream gas pipeline 2 from the EU gas directives requirements. This was stated by diplomat at a comments for Radio Liberty.

“In essence, we are talking about preserving the domestic gas transportation system as the main transit for energy carriers to the EU market. Today’s verdict from German independent regulators on refusal to exclude NS-2 gas pipelines from European legislation has been a sensitive blow to Russia and all lobbyists in Germany, before all to Mr. Schroeder, “he said.

Melnyk added that “it is too early to say that the current victory around Nord Stream 2 is final.”

We recall that on 4 April 2019, the European Parliament approved an updated directive that applies EU gas market rules for pipes laid from non-EU countries (in particular, Nord Stream 2, which must be placed along the Baltic Sea floor between Russia and Germany). Among the main provisions of the directive are the separation of the companies that supply gas and the companies that transport it. This means that the company operator Nord Stream 2 must be independent of Gazprom, and 50 percent of its capacity must be provided for alternative suppliers. Exceptions are possible, but only with the approval of the European Commission.
