Coronavirus has mutated to become more deadly in Europe than the US, the study found | Instant News


There are more than 2.4 million cases of the corona virus around the world to date, and a new study shows that strains in Europe today are far more deadly than those found in the US.

Researchers from Zhejiang University believe corona virus has mutated into at least 30 different types.

Strains in China and Europe are found to be some of the most dangerous, while those in the US are lighter, according to South China Morning Post.

In the study, researchers analyzed virus strains from 11 coronavirus patients, testing how effectively the virus can infect and kill human cells.

The results revealed that some of the deadliest mutations were found in Zhejiang, while this strain was also found in Spain, Italy, and New York.

Alarmingly, this type of virus was found to create up to 270 times the viral load compared to the lightest type.

Meanwhile, the lightest strains are mostly found in the US, including in the State of Washington.

In the study, published in medRxiv, the researchers, led by Hangping Yao, wrote: “These findings indicate that the mutations observed in our study, and possibly the isolates of viruses collected throughout the world, can significantly impact the pathogenicity of SARS-CoV-2.”

In all, the researchers identified 31 types of viruses – 19 of them new.

They explained: “19 of the 31 mutations identified were new, although the date of sampling was relatively early, showing that the true diversity of virus strains is still largely underappreciated.”

Based on their findings, the researchers concluded that while the coronavirus vaccine might help some patients, it might not be effective against some types.

They concluded: “Finally, similar to the flu, the development of drugs and vaccines, while pressing, needs to consider the impact of the accumulation of these mutations, especially the mutation of the founder, to avoid potential pitfalls.”
