CHICAGO – The youngest victim in Cook County has died due to complications related to coronavirus. Ernesto Guzman, 12, from the Chicago Gage Park neighborhood, died right after midnight on May 14th Christ Advocate Medical Center on Oak Lawn.
That Cook County Medical Examiner listed pneumonia as the leading cause of death with COVID-19 infection as a causative factor. The boy also suffered from underlying conditions including asthma, sleep apnea and Charcot-Marie-Tooth, a rare disease that weakens the nerves that control muscles.

“I’m sure every parent is sad to hear this news, every life lost is a tragedy and more emotional when still a child,” said Director of the Illinois Department of Public Health Dr. Ngozi Ezike. “There is no way to predict who will get this severe outcome.”
That Chicago Teachers Union posted on Facebook that Guzman is a student at Acero Marquez Elementary School. His uncle, Sergio Lara, created a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral expenses. Lara said her niece was six years old when she was diagnosed with CRT. Since his first operation, Guzman “he fought for his life with a strong spirit”
“Even though he may have been taken away from us at such a young age, we will never forget the importance of unity and family which he deeply valued,” his uncle wrote. “He is always surrounded by love and happiness, and we know he makes an impact on whoever he meets.”
On Friday, The Ernesto Samuel Lara Guzman GoFundMe Campaign has collected $ 24,610.
