A 58-year-old nurse has become the first NHS worker in Scotland who died after contracting Covid-19.

Janice Graham, a health care supporter and district nurse, sadly died on Monday at Inverclyde Royal Hospital after contracting the deadly virus.

The news follows the death of last week West Dunbartonshire care worker Catherine Sweeney.

Louise Long, chief officer of the Inverclyde Health and Social Care Partnership, said: “We are sad to confirm that a staff member died because of Covid-19.

“Our thoughts are with the people Janice loved in this difficult time.

“Janice is a valuable team member in our Nursing Services and Afternoon Services team and provides kindness and compassion to patients and colleagues.

“His smart and attractive personality and keen intelligence will be greatly missed.

“A memorial book will be opened at the Port Glasgow Health Center for staff who want to pay tribute to Janice.

“We are very grateful to our staff for their tireless efforts during this crisis. We are here to support them as much as possible during this challenging time. “

Friends pay tribute to nurses on social media.

“This is a tragic reminder why we all need to stay indoors and stay safe,” one of his Facebook friends wrote.

“Janice will not be forgotten and we can respect her by doing our best to stay safe and keep our loved ones safe by staying away.”

He added: “I struggle to accept this, he is a wee legend and I’m sure many of you have fond memories of working with him. Sending my sincere condolences to his family.”

Diane Murray, Scotland’s deputy chief nursing officer, posted on Twitter: “Our deepest sympathy is with Janice Graham’s family at this very sad time! We thank her for her service for years!”
