People are locked inside their homes to stay safe from Co-19 pandemic, but social isolation can increase their risk of other health problems. A new study reveals that people who are socially isolated have a greater risk of facing cardiovascular events, such as a heart attack or stroke.
The study also found that those who were socially isolated were twice as likely to die from any cause than those who were socially integrated.

For this study, researchers from University Hospital in Essen, Germany, analyzed data from 4,316 people (average age 59.1 years). No participants who did not have known cardiovascular disease at the beginning of the study. They were followed for an average of 13 years.
During 13.4 years of follow-up, the researchers looked at 339 cardiovascular events such as heart attacks or strokes and 530 deaths among study participants.
After adjusting for other possibilities cardiovascular risk factors, the researchers found that lack of social integration increased the risk of future cardiovascular events by 44 percent. Social alienation also increases the risk of death from all causes by 47 percent.
Lack of financial support was also found to be associated with a 30 percent increase in the risk of cardiovascular events.
To avoid COVID-19 infection, people are strongly encouraged to practice social distance. This study suggests finding effective ways to overcome problems related to social isolation to improve our overall health and longevity.
