July 21 (UPI) – An Italian community captured the Guinness World Record when the cheese maker created the pecorino wheel weighing 1,319.5 pounds.
The Loculi Commune, on the island of Sardinia, collecting cheese on May 12, 2019, and the cheese was seasoned for 12 months before being officially examined by the Guinness adjudicator.
The massive pecorino was declared the largest cheese made from sheep’s milk, defeating 1,178.8 pounds of pecorino made at Ascoli Piceno, in the Le Marche region of Italy, in 2009.
“Cheese is made with traditional methods and, above and beyond the record, it is an opportunity to rediscover the skills of craftsmen and regional food culture,” Anna Pitzalis, who designed the record-breaking wooden wheel holding cheese, said ANSA.
