ROME, September 24 (Reuters) – Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and his most senior ministers agreed on Thursday to take stronger steps to ensure national security in the country’s 5G network, Conte’s office said after a meeting of top government officials.
The meeting came as the United States increased pressure on Rome to exclude China’s Huawei from its 5G infrastructure.
Those present at the meeting, including the economy and industry ministers, agreed that it is “an absolute priority to pursue a technology independence strategy within the framework of the European Union,” the statement said.
There was no mention of Chinese telecommunications equipment maker Huawei Technologies.
