Baghdad, Iraq

Pope Francis returned Monday to Italy after a historic four-day visit to Iraq.

Francis was sent with an official farewell ceremony held at the Baghdad International Airport. Iraqi President Barham Saleh accompanies the Pope to the plane.

The four-day visit from March 5-8 covered five Iraqi cities, including Baghdad, Erbil, Mosul, Najaf and Nasiriyah.

It was the Pope’s first visit to Iraq and the Pope’s first foreign visit since last year’s global coronavirus outbreak.
