Italy on Friday reported 130 more deaths from the new corona virus, as the country prepared to further reduce locking restrictions in early June.
The death toll in the country jumped to 32,616, according to data released by the Italian Civil Protection Department.
The department confirmed the peak of the outbreak was behind. The count of active infections on Friday fell again, to 1,638, putting the total at 59,322.
Meanwhile, recovery continues to increase, reaching 136,720, as more patients leave intensive care, reducing pressure on the overwhelmed Italian health care system.
The Italian epicenter of the epidemic remained the northern Lombardy region, where deaths continued to increase, reaching 15,784, nearly half of the country’s total deaths.
Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said on Thursday that the country had overcome the worst of the coronavirus crisis, but also called on the Italians to continue to stick to the rules to avoid new spikes in transmission.
Commenting on reports and pictures of young people gathering at night in several cities in Italy, the prime minister stressed that “now is not the time for parties, for movidas [nightlife], for a get-together. “
The Italian government has decided to allow unlimited travel between Italy and other European Union and Schengen countries – and within Italy itself – from June 3.
From that date, Italian citizens will be allowed to travel between regions, but the government is considering new restrictions.
According to several Italian media reports, people will be free to travel only between regions that have the same level of transmission.
