Fish & Game New Zealand is determined to maintain the “sport” of the shooting of ducks which starts in late May (pushed back from March due to COVID-19 restrictions). However, the organization is worried about New Zealand native bird species. Animal rights organization SECURE said the sport was “basically cruel” and should be banned.
SAFE explained that “Ducks, geese, geese and pukeko are among the species that are considered ‘fair play’ by shooters. Native species such as heaven shelducks and gray ducks were also shot. “They also provide more insight into how many birds die during this hunting season – not all birds are found and some are left to die with painful death.
A Change the petition echoed this sentiment and called for a ban on duck shooting, especially as an effort to protect three native species: Gray Duck (Parera), Shoveler (Kuruwhengi) and Paradise Shelduck (Putangitangi). It also called for protection of “Pukeko, an iconic native waterfowl that is fired in tens of thousands each season, mostly ‘for fun’.”
That The petition claims that: “All duck species decline, including abundant Mallard. Over-hunting, habitat loss, pollution, and climate change are the main causes. “
If you agree and want to ban cruel duck shooting, sign this petition call for protection for this beautiful species!
