Air NZ confirmed that it had begun consulting with staff to reduce the number of its workforce by up to 3,500 roles.
“We started the consultation process with our staff yesterday to reduce our workforce to 3,500 roles,” the airline told Newshub.
“It is hoped that Air NZ will be a much smaller airline for some time even outside the initial impact of COVID-19. This airline, pre-COVID-19, employs 12,500 people worldwide and it is expected that even within one year it will be at least 30 percent smaller than now.
“We understand that this is a very difficult time for many New Zealanders.”
