Jan 24 18:58 UTC: First to report: GEONET (NZ) after 1 minute.
24 Jan 19:04: Magnitude recalculated from 4.7 to 4.5. The depth of the hypocenter was recalculated from 7.7 to 3.8 km (from 4.8 to 2.4 miles).
The earthquake struck at a very shallow depth of 7.7 km below the epicenter near Rotorua, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand, in the morning on Monday 25 January 2021 at 7:57 local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised in the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) that listed the earthquake at a scale of 4.7 as well.
Based on preliminary seismic data, the earthquake was likely felt by many people in the epicenter area. It shouldn’t cause any significant damage, other than objects falling off shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Kawerau (pop. 6,700) which is 19 km from the epicenter, Rotorua (pop. 65,900) is 22 km away, and Rotorua (pop. 65,900) is 22 km away, the earthquake should have been mild.
Weak shaking may have been felt in Edgecumbe (eruption 1,600) which is 32 km from the epicenter, Maketu (eruption 1,100) 35 km, Whakatane (pop. 18,600) 46 km, Tauranga (pop. 110,300) 52 km, and Taupo (pop. 22,500) is 76 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth when these change and follow up when other important earthquake news becomes available. If you are in the area, please send us your experiences through our reporting mechanism as well on line or through our mobile application. This will help us provide more live updates to anyone around the world who wants to know more about this earthquake.
Info: The more agencies that report about the same earthquake and post similar data, the more confident you will be in that data. It usually takes several hours for earthquake parameters to be calculated with near-optimal precision.
