Foreign Minister Hon Nanaia Mahuta today announced three diplomatic appointments:

  • Alana Hudson as Ambassador to Poland
  • John Riley as Consul General for Hong Kong
  • Stephen Wong as Consul General to Shanghai


“New Zealand’s relations with Poland are built on lasting personal, economic and historical relationships. Poland is also an important partner for New Zealand in the European Union, and our FTA with the EU, which is currently being negotiated, will provide a good basis for strengthening our relationship. “

Ms Hudson is a career diplomat, who has had previous posts in Belgium and Switzerland.

Hong Kong

“New Zealand’s engagement with the authorities and the people of Hong Kong is very important to us,” said Nanaia Mahuta. “As I have said before, New Zealand is concerned about developments in recent months and is committed to supporting the rights and freedoms of the Hong Kong people.”

Mr Riley has had previous posts in Korean and English.


“Shanghai is China’s commercial and financial center and the most populous city. It is also home to New Zealand’s large business community, and is an important market for our exports, tourism and education, ”said Nanaia Mahuta.

Mr Wong most recently served as Consul General in Chengdu. He has also held previous positions in Myanmar, Singapore and Indonesia.
