LAHORE: The price of flour has been raised by Rs50 per bag on the retail market, raising it to the level of bags Rs975 / 20kg or Rs48.75 per kg.
According to Haji Yousaf, veteran trader and president of the Lahore Atta Dealer Association, the price of wheat has risen and reached Rs 1,800 per 40 kg. High wheat prices require a revision of the price of flour to the top.
Since the beginning of last month, there has been a surge of Rs 170 per bag or 21 percent of the price of flour, which is a staple food in this part of the world. Flour prices have been increased by all factories and will take effect starting Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the price of fine ‘atta’ has also increased to Rs4700 per 84 kg of bags, indicating an increase of Rs300. The price of ‘suji’ or semolina was also raised to Rs2850 per 50kg of bag from Rs 2650.
Market insiders argue that the price of flour can surge to Rs100 per bag in a few days if the government fails to take corrective action. They also stressed the need to introduce a wheat flour subsidy scheme for the poor as soon as possible to protect them from the adverse effects of emerging inflationary pressures.
