K-Electric has been in close contact with leading business associations and Karachi entities since the beginning of COVID-19 and resulted in lockouts. EC representatives convened this meeting to highlight the challenges in the electricity supply situation in Karachi. The meeting was held with KIF, KATI, SITE, FBATI, SSHATI, NKATI and Mr. Fisheries, among others. Peak energy demand crosses 3500 MW due to high temperatures and humidity in Karachi, power supply remains affected due to lack of fuel supply to KE and IPP which supplies energy to KE. Power plants also face challenges on the renewable energy side of the wind and sun, the reason being the cloudy sky and low wind pressure. This problem is compounded by the unavailability of the KANNUP power plant since the beginning of July 2020. This gap between supply and demand has necessitated a load management regime especially at night when discretionary electricity demand is high, KE informed the industry association. While EC always consistently supports the industry and prioritizes services to them by becoming the first utility in Pakistan to implement 100% warehouse clearance for industry, the current shortage situation is unprecedented.
