KARACHI – A total of 171 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in the past two days, around 2,096 Sindh Police personnel and officers have been infected with the corona virus so far, a Sindh Police spokesman said on Saturday.
He said at present, 1,584 officers and personnel were being treated while 496 had returned to their homes after recovering from illness.
The spokesman said 16 officers and personnel had lost the battle against COVID-19, of which 14 belonged to Karachi Range and two from the Hyderabad Sindh Police Range.
Since the appearance of 16 police, including officers, have been martyred while carrying out their duties, said a spokesman. Fourteen policemen were killed by the disease in Karachi and two in the Hyderabad Police Department, according to the spokesman.
At present 1584 police are under treatment, said a Sindh Police spokesman.
Since the emergence of the first COVID-19 case in Karachi in the last week of February this year, this pandemic has devastated all parts of Pakistan.
Previously, the Sukkur SSP has released bi-monthly reports on coronavirus cases in the police, which have confirmed 159 positive cases of the virus in officers and other personnel in the region for two months.
“Infected officers and department staff have been posted at 22 Sukkur district police stations,” the report said.
Infected department staff also include personnel in the traffic police, according to the report.
“Of the total 159 infected policemen, 36 have defeated the corona virus,” the report said.
The police were infected with the corona virus while carrying out their duties, said SSP Sukkur.
More than 146 inmates and prison staff tested positive for using the new corona virus in Sukkur Central Prison at the end of June.
According to the Sukkur Central Prison authority, a total of 1,600 tests were carried out, of which 146 tested positive for COVID-19.
The authorities said that 93 people, out of 146 positive cases, had recovered from illness including 85 prisoners and eight prison staff.
In May, more than 200 inmates and nine wardens tested positive for a new corona virus in Karachi Central Prison.
11 new positive cases were reported in Tharparkar
Around 11 new cases have been reported positive for COVID-19 with a total of 466 in the Tharparkar district. The district health department confirmed on Saturday that new cases had been transmitted locally including seven in Diplo and its surroundings while four appeared in Chelhaar. Health officials said that of the 466 patients 158 had so far recovered while 308 were isolated at home.
