Rs5 million in cash was taken from residents and sacrificial animals were killed in the crossfire when armed robbers stormed a cattle market in Surjani City on Wednesday night.
According to police, six armed men took cattle traders and buyers hostage and were intercepted by security guards at the market. In the ensuing shootout, a security guard, identified as Muhammad Ali, was injured when a cow was hit by a bullet and died.
Eyewitnesses said the robbers held all those present at the market hostage for up to 15 minutes when they continued to shoot, spreading panic among those present.
The police stated that the area had been closed while a search was underway to find the culprit.
Separately, Malir district police arrested three suspects and found 14 stolen goats and a vehicle from their possession during the attack near North Bypass.
The suspects, identified as Abdul Ghaffar, Yasin and Nazeer, are suspected of stealing sacrificial goats from the City of Gadap. Cases are registered against them and further investigations are ongoing.
