PM Imran Khan called on the Pakistani Army to clean up rain-stricken Karachi | Instant News

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday called on the Pakistani Army to provide assistance in cleaning up rain-stricken Karachi, ARY NEWS reported.

Descending to Twitter, the prime minister also directed the Chair of the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) Lieutenant General Muhammad Afzal to reach Karachi immediately and oversee cleanliness efforts.

I have asked Pak’s army to also help clean up the city, he said while previously saying that he had asked the NDMA Chair to go to Karachi immediately and start cleaning after the rain.

Ali Zaidi, speaking to the ARY News ’11th Hour’ program, said that they had asked the Sindh authorities since June about cleaning up the nullahs in Karachi that would create problems during the rainy season, while the federal government had taken the initiative to clean choked nullahs last year .

He expressed concern that further delays in cleaning up the Nullah would spread disease in Karachi because rainwater drainage would mix with the main water system.

Zaidi added that they would cleanse the Nullah in all major cities along with the chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and also expect from the Sindh government to maintain cleanliness.

Sindh Minister Saeed Ghani said that he did not know why the prime minister asked the Pakistani Army to help clean up the metropolitan city. He said that the provincial government issued funds to the local government to clean up the Prophets, while that was the responsibility of the Karachi Metropolitan Company (KMC) and the District City Company (DMC).

He cricitated that the federal government did not give funds to Sindh when needed and he was surprised to learn about the PM’s decision to send the NDMA chairman to Karachi.

Earlier in the day, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of valuable lives during the recent rains in Karachi, Prime Minister Imran Khan assured that the center was to provide all-out cooperation in solving the problems of the metropolitan city.

Sources said that PM Imran Khan made this statement during a meeting with Sindh Governor Imran Ismail in Islamabad today. He directed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to submit a detailed report on the steps taken to clear waterways in the metropolis.

The post-rain situation in Karachi, federal-funded development projects in Sindh and other issues were discussed at the meeting, the sources said.

Sindh Governor Imran Ismail said, “The Karachi problem cannot be solved without empowering the local government.” He stated that the problem could be overcome through Article 140-A of the constitution.

It is important to mention here that it is raining causing chaos in the city after the city witnessed the main streets and residential areas submerged by rain, death due to electric shock and many hours without prior notice loading shedding.
