MQM-P praised PM’s support for empowering local governments
The Muttahida Qaumi-Pakistan Movement (MQM-P) on Wednesday praised Prime Minister Imran Khan for raising concerns over alleged Sindh government efforts to cripple the local government system and to support applications filed at the Supreme Court for the implementation of Article 140-constitution.
The day before, the Prime Minister said that “Karachi’s old problems cannot be resolved unless elected representatives of the LG people become financially, politically and administratively independent in the spirit of the Constitution”.
He has also directed the attorney general to immediately appeal to the Supreme Court for the preliminary hearing and the decision regarding the petition related to Article 140-A submitted in the high court. MQM-P, Pakistani coalition partner Tehreek-e-Insaf PM, said in a statement that constitutional amendments were needed to form a powerless LG system in accordance with Article 140-A, and without it, resolving the civil problems of Karachi and other major city centers impossible.
They accused the Sindh Pakistan People’s Party government of taking revenge from residents of the provincial city center, including Karachi, for not voting for them in the election by seizing power and funds from their LG system.
“The Sindh government has claimed the power to provide water, sewage and waste disposal, and other civic responsibility in Karachi after taking it from the city government.”
They said that after MQM-P won the election, the provincial government seized several departments, specifically the Karachi Development Authority, Solid Waste Management, Master Plan, Education, Health, Local Taxes, Revenue and Food, before the mayor election. and district leaders.
“They [the Sindh government] has restricted the power of the mayor of Karachi to the people of the Sindh inland city committee, “the MQM-P said, claiming that because of this, departments working under the provincial government had completely destroyed Karachi. They said they expected the federal government to play its role in resolving the problems of residents of the Sindh city centers, including Karachi, and restoring their rights.
