At least 13 people were killed and several others injured when a passenger van overturned and caught fire on the Karachi-Hyderabad Highway (M-9) in the jurisdiction of the Nooriabad police station on Saturday night.

The vehicle was carrying at least 20 people when they met an accident near the Lucky Semen factory which is on the route. Of the seven survivors, five were transferred to hospital, said additional IG Highway Police, Dr Aftab Pathan.

He said six bodies had been found, while survivors included the van driver and a child. The bodies could not be immediately identified.

Nooriabad Deputy Police Inspector Nazar Deeshak said the van was on its way to Karachi from Hyderabad when the accident occurred 63 kilometers from Hyderabad.

“The driver is said to have braked after the hood of the car in front of him fell off and hit the van,” said AIG Pathan.

According to DSP Deeshak, the van overturned and caught fire after making several turns and bouncing on the road. He said the passenger’s body was completely charred.

Ambulance Edhi from Karachi and Edhi Home rushed to the scene, as did a fire brigade tender to put out the fire.

The flow of vehicle traffic was halted after the Highway Police shut down the M-9 Hyderabad-Karachi section.

Thousands of people lose their lives in traffic accidents across the country each year caused by bad roads, poorly maintained vehicles and reckless driving. Collisions that killed dozens of people are not uncommon.
